What Services Are Covered Under a Preventative Dental Exam?
The purpose of a preventative dental exam is to keep patients from developing oral health problems that can destroy the functionality and appearance of their teeth. Preventative exams also help dentists identify existing dental problems so that they can fix these issues before they worsen. Proper dental hygiene is important for overall health because researchers actually have linked oral bacteria to problems such as cardiovascular disease.-
Diagnostic Exam
-
One service covered under a preventative dental exam is a diagnostic charting of a patient's teeth. During this type of clinical oral examination, a dentist uses a mirror and explorer to detect dental caries, also known as cavities, as well as missing teeth and restorations. Dentists also look at occlusal relationships -- or how the teeth come together -- as well as anomalies in hard and soft tissues and periodontal conditions that affect the gums and supporting structures of teeth. An oral cancer screening is part of this service.
Cleaning
-
A preventative dental exam covers teeth cleanings. Patients must get their teeth cleaned at least every six months, but a cleaning every three to four months is more appropriate for patients with periodontal disease. Dental cleanings allow dental hygienists to remove plaque and tartar from patients' teeth. If not removed, tartar can contribute to gingivitis -- an inflammation of the gums -- then to a more serious form of gum disease called periodontitis.
X-rays
-
A preventative dental exam includes a full mouth set of X-rays and bitewing X-rays. Full-mouth X-rays show pictures of all teeth in the mouth, while bitewing X-rays show pictures of the molar and premolar teeth and help dentists detect cavities between these teeth. Insurance providers typically cover full-mouth X-rays every 36 to 60 months and cover bitewing X-rays every six months. X-rays show problems that are not readily visible during a regular clinical examination.
Sealants
-
The application of sealants to teeth also is a covered preventative service. Sealants are clear protective coatings that cover the surfaces of teeth, thus preventing bacteria and food particles from getting embedded in the grooves of the teeth. Dental sealants essentially help prevent cavities from forming in the molar and premolar teeth and typically are covered for patients under the age of 18.
