How to Repair Lower Dentures

A lower denture is a precision prosthetic appliance made in a dental lab under the direction of a licensed dentist. Like any dental appliance, a lower denture can break. Although denture fix-it kits are sold in drug stores, it is unwise to attempt the repair yourself. Only a licensed dental professional should make repairs on a lower denture to ensure that the fit the patient had before the breakage is the fit he will have after the repair. Home repairs often lead to the patient needing to spend money on a new denture when the one he had was still wearable.

Instructions

    • 1

Schedule an appointment with the dentist that made the dentures. If that dentist is no longer local, most dentists can do denture repairs. The most common break in a lower denture is right in the middle between the two front teeth, where the acrylic is the thinnest.

    • 2

Arrive at the dental office at the appointed time, and do not forget to bring the denture. A denture repair appointment is usually early in the morning as the dentures are sent out if it is a repair a dentist cannot do on site.

    • 3

Give the denture to the dentist and allow him to inspect it. He will often try the pieces in the mouth even though they are broken to get an idea why the denture broke.

    • 4

Allow the dentist to take an impression of the lower ridge of bone; this will assist him in making the necessary repair to the broken denture. The denture will reschedule you to return to the office late in the afternoon to pick up the repaired denture.

    • 5

Return to the office at the appointed time to retrieve the repaired denture. The area where the denture broke will not be visible, save for new acrylic that may be pinker than the older acrylic. The dentist will try the denture in and make sure it fits as comfortably as it did before. If not, he will do some adjustment to correct where the acrylic may be sharp or too thick until it fits as before.
