How to Adjust the Flow Control Knob on a Water Pump

Homes that are not hooked up to central sewer and water systems typically use individual septic systems and well-type systems for water. These well systems are powered in part by water pumps that help control the flow and pressure of water. If the water pressure coming from the water pump seems low it may need to be manually adjusted at the pump. There are two flow control knobs, which are actually screws, that are adjusted to achieve proper water balance.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off power to the pump at the breaker box.

    • 2

Slip the adjustable wrench over the securing bolt holding the pressure switch panel in place to access the flow control screws, or knobs. There will be two spring-loaded bolts in place. One will be longer in height and the other shorter. The taller of the two is the "cut in" pressure knob. The shorter is the "cut out" pressure knob.

    • 3

Turn both bolts counterclockwise approximately one half-turn

    • 4

Restore the power to the water pump and check the water pressure inside the home or on an outdoor water hose faucet.

    • 5

If the pressure is adequate, replace the pressure switch panel on the pump. If it is not, shut off power to the pump again and turn both flow control knobs one more half-turn to the left, or counterclockwise.

    • 6

Restore the power to the pump and then replace the pressure switch panel.
