Types of Teeth Veneers
Veneers are used to restore a damaged, gaped, fractured or discolored tooth. They are 1 millimeter thick, and are placed on healthy intact teeth. Dentist do not have to shape or file a tooth down for a dental veneer like they would for a crown. Veneers can lengthen a tooth and make it wider, and they come in 25 different shades. Veneers can also reduce the sensitivity to hot, cold and sweets because they add a protective layer to your teeth.-
Non-Permanent Veneers
-
You can get a non-permanent veneer that can be removed as needed. They are made of flexible resin material. You can even purchase kits to make them yourself at home.
Porcelain Veneers
-
Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shell bonded to the front of the tooth. Unlike dental crowns, veneers have no metal in them. Porcelain veneers take two visits. The first visit the dentist takes an impression of your teeth. The dentist makes a plastic temporary veneer until you get your permanent veneer. The second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary veneer and place the permanent porcelain veneer on. They are much stronger than composite veneers and have less of a chance of fracture. The shape and color are closer to your natural teeth than that of composite veneers.
Composite Veneers
-
Composite veneers can be fitted in one dental visit. They are smoothed and polished to look like your regular teeth. They are not as strong as porcelain veneers, and are prone to fracture if biting on hard or crunchy food items. They can be easily repaired. The color may not be exactly the same shade as natural teeth. Composite veneers may change color over time and turn darker or yellow. If they change color you can have them replaced.
Palatal Veneers
-
This type of veneer is often constructed of gold. It can also be made from porcelain or composite. This veneer is made for the treatment and management of tooth wear on the palate side of upper teeth. Tooth wear comes from acid erosion.
