Taking Care of Acrylic Veneers

Temporary acrylic veneers are affixed to your teeth before your permanent porcelain veneers arrive from the lab. These transitory veneers help reduce sensitivity in your mouth and gums, restore the appearance of the tooth surface in the interim and prevent shifting of your teeth. Application occurs on your first of two dental appointments for this cosmetic procedure, where the dentist pares down the enamel on the tooth surface so the new veneers will not interfere with your natural bite. Special oral care of your acrylic veneers will help keep them in place until your next dental appointment.

Instructions

    • 1

Avoid eating after your dental appointment until the anesthesia has completely worn off, usually between 2 to 3 hours. Chewing during numbness can cause you to damage the interior of your mouth without realizing it.

    • 2

Take an over-the-counter pain reliever to help reduce the pain and inflammation often caused by application of the temporary veneers.

    • 3

Do not eat or drink hot or cold foods and beverages for three days after your appointment. The heightened sensitivity to extreme temperatures can cause additional discomfort.

    • 4

Clean around the temporary acrylic veneers carefully with your toothbrush and toothpaste, avoiding harsh scrubbing, which can shift or dislodge the temporary veneer.

    • 5

Rinse your teeth with a solution of 1/2 tsp. of salt to 8 oz. of lukewarm water to help aid in sensitivity.

    • 6

Use a small blob of dental adhesive to re-affix the temporary acrylic veneer if it comes off before your next appointment. Call your dentist for a new appointment to re-cement the veneer to hold it more permanently in place.
