How to Remove Dental Veneers

Veneering is a common dental procedure for those with unsightly teeth. Dental veneers are thin, custom-designed shells that fit over teeth to cover up cracks, stains or spaces. However, after several years, veneers can become chipped, broken or discolored, and may need to be removed. One you have veneers, you will have to permanently wear them because the front layer of enamel has been removed from your teeth. Since veneers are bonded by cement to the teeth, they are not to be removed by an individual, but only by a professional dentist.

    • 1

Contact your dentist immediately if you have broken or chipped your veneer, because it will need to be removed and replaced as soon as possible. Discuss with your dentist what happened to your veneers that caused them to need to be removed.

    • 2

Realize that if you have too little enamel left on your teeth after the veneers are removed, crowns may be your only option. However, if there is a significant amount of enamel still preserved on your teeth, redoing the veneer should not be an issue.

    • 3

Schedule an appointment with your dentist to have the veneers removed. Your dentist will notch them, causing them to pop off, and then refurbish your teeth before bonding the veneers on again. New impressions of your teeth will need to be made if your veneers need to be completely replaced.
