Types of Fake Teeth

Teeth are needed to chew and grind food down so swallowing is easier. Throughout life, teeth can become worn down, filled with cavities and sometimes even fall out due to lack of proper oral care. When teeth need to be replaced, dental practitioners have a number of options to consider, based on the patient's specific situation. Technology has come so far that those with an untrained eye will never realize a person's tooth or teeth aren't real.
  1. Crown

    • A crown is used to restore or replace a missing tooth. Usually when there is a large cavity in a tooth that needs to be filled or partly removed, a crown is put in place and bonded to the remaining part of the tooth with dental cement. Crowns are usually made from porcelain to match the other teeth in the mouth; gold may be used for back teeth and for those who for some reason want to draw attention to their fake tooth.

    Fixed Bridges

    • Fixed bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth due to oral health problems such as cavities and gaps between teeth. These fake teeth are fused onto the crowns of teeth and have three units that are the false teeth, or real teeth and two crowns. Fixed bridges are made from porcelain to match the teeth you already have.

    Dentures

    • Dentures are false teeth used to replace missing teeth. Dentures come in full sets of teeth or partial sets depending on what is needed. Dentures are placed on the upper or lower jaw and sometimes both. These false teeth don't attach to the jaw, which means they're removable. All dentures are custom made so they fit comfortably inside the mouth and look like your own set of real teeth.

    Dental Implants

    • Implants are false teeth that provide a natural look like a bridge, but don't require involving adjacent teeth, so they are often preferred when just one tooth needs to be replaced. Implants are secured into the jaw bone using titanium screws and the crown is "painted" by a ceramicist to match the adjacent teeth. Placing the implants directly into the jawbone makes them secure so you can eat and live your life worry-free with regard to your fake teeth.
