Tips For Gluing Dentures

Cracked, chipped or broken dentures can actually cause damage to the inside of your mouth, but replacing dentures can be expensive. A more cost-efficient alternative is to repair your broken dentures at home with glue or a denture repair kit. If you are planning to glue your dentures yourself, it is important to clean them first and use the appropriate glue.

  1. Preparing the Dentures

    • Clean the dentures using a denture cleanser, and file down any sharp edges with a metal nail file. Wash the dentures thoroughly to make sure any acrylic filings are removed from the dentures. If your dentures are dirty or dusty, the glue will not bond correctly. Let the dentures dry completely before attempting to glue them.

    Choosing the Right Glue

    • Do not use household glue to bond broken dentures. Saliva and food acids in your mouth will break down most glues. You can find glue specifically for dentures at your local pharmacy. You can also use quick-setting cyanoacrylate, but this glue can dissolve over time, so it is recommended that you see a dentist or dental laboratory technician as soon as possible.

    Denture Repair Kits

    • Denture repair kits can be found online and at some pharmacies. The kit includes denture cleanser and glue or adhesive. Some kits even include replacement teeth for your dentures. The adhesive in these kits is made to last in moist environments and will not be compromised by saliva or denture cleanser. Many of these kits guarantee that your dentures will not break in the same spot again.

    Gluing Your Dentures

    • If you use a repair kit, read its instructions and use the applicators that come with the tip. If you are using cyanoacrylate or another strong adhesive, make sure your applicator has a pin-size hole so you can be precise with the application. Avoid using too much glue.

      After you have applied the glue, press the broken pieces together and hold them tightly in place for several minutes until the adhesive is completely dry. Check your glue to find the manufacturer's recommended drying time. Once the dentures have been bonded, sand away any extra glue with a metal file, and wash your dentures to remove the glue shavings.
