Complications From Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are thin shells that are bonded to the front of a tooth, which can make a dramatic difference in the look and appearance of the tooth. The veneers can change the shape, length or size of the tooth. Porcelain veneers are ideal, as they tend to look more natural, and they also resist stains well. While there are many positives to porcelain veneers, there can be complications from them as well.-
Sensitivity
-
One complication from porcelain veneers is sensitivity in the tooth. When the dentist prepares teeth for veneers, she does have to sacrifice some of the tooth, while trying to remove as little of the tooth structure as possible. Because some of the enamel is removed, there may be some minor tooth sensitivity. Usually it is temporary and only lasts one to two weeks after receiving the veneers. Avoid foods that are very hot or very cold.
Damage
-
Veneers are not as durable as real teeth. They may have to be replaced over time due to damage or just becoming worn down. If the veneer cracks or breaks, the dentist will not be able to repair it. Also, you will have to wear the unsightly, cracked or broken veneer until your dentist can replace it.
Decay
-
As veneers are placed on the tooth, there still can be complications due to decay. When you have porcelain veneers, the decay can be harder to remove and treat. Depending on the amount of decay and how it has harmed the tooth and surrounding gums, you may need to have a crown placed over the veneer and tooth.
