How to Make Gold Teeth Caps

Tooth caps, or grillz, are on the rise. These gold, white gold or platinum caps, sometimes covered in jewels, were worn by hiphop stars as early as the 1980s. But it's only been in the last five years, with the rise of Dirty South rap, that they have become popular mainstream jewelry. They are most often worn by 18 to 35-year-old urban males who listen to hiphop. The caps are usually removable, though permanent caps can be fitted. If you want to invest in a grill without breaking the bank, it's possible to make your own, though going to a dentist may get better results.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the jelly or clay onto the molding tray, put the tray in your mouth and clamp down for two to three minutes. Breathe through your nose.

    • 2

Remove the mold from your mouth, and wait for it to dry completely, which will take at least 15 minutes.

    • 3

Cover the mold with jeweler's wax. This will prevent the gold from sticking to the mold.

    • 4

Decide how big your grill will be and cut a piece of gold out that is roughly the right size. One cap or grill can cover just one tooth or as many as six teeth.

    • 5

Heat the gold using the hand torch, as you slowly press it to the mold, covering the front, top and back. Do not heat the gold to its melting point, but only enough to make it soft and pliable.

    • 6

Neaten up the surface of the cap with the shaping tools. If the gold is too stiff to work with, you can reheat it with the torch. Once you are happy with the shape, take the cap to a cool place and leave it to dry for one hour.

    • 7

File off any rough edges or sharp corners on the cap.

    • 8

If you want your grill or cap to be bright and eye-catching, polish it using a cloth and gold polish.
