How to Protect the Teeth From Tartar

Tartar is the accumulation of food, minerals and other debris that have hardened onto your teeth. Tartar can even get underneath the gumline and eventually lead to cavities and gum disease if left unchecked. Once you have tartar buildup, you will need to see a dentist because you can't remove it at home. However, you can take preventive measures to reduce the risk of tartar.

Instructions

Brush your teeth twice a day to remove food debris and plaque. Plaque is a bacteria that forms on the teeth from certain foods and drinks. The bacteria in plaque is harmful because the acids in it can harm the tooth enamel and lead to cavities. Also, plaque can eventually harden into tartar. When brushing, clean the back, top and/or bottom and front of each tooth.

Floss your teeth at least once a day. Flossing will get rid of plaque and food debris between the teeth and keep the gums healthy. Place the floss between two teeth. Bring the floss gently to the gumline. Slide the floss up and down the side of each tooth.

Use tartar control products. Brush your teeth with a tartar control toothpaste every time you brush. This will help to further prevent tartar buildup. Follow up with a tartar control mouthwash as well.

Get your teeth cleaned at the dentist. You should do this according to your dentist's recommendations, but go at least once a year to remove plaque.
