The Correct Ways of Brushing Your Teeth

There are many different ways to brush your teeth. Some people brush with a manual toothbrush while others prefer an electric or sonic care toothbrush. There are also many different types of toothpaste to choose from. Regardless of which tooth brushing method you prefer, they are all geared toward promoting good oral hygiene.
  1. Toothbrushes

    • The type of toothbrush you use depends on your personal preference. You may not like the vibrating motion that you get from an electric or battery-operated toothbrush. Maybe you have limited mobility and therefore prefer an electric toothbrush. Another option is the sonic care toothbrush that uses sonic waves to stimulate saliva and cleanse your teeth and mouth. The manual toothbrush is the most affordable and the sonic care toothbrush is the most effective, although all brushes provide sufficient cleansing when proper technique is applied.

    Toothpastes

    • Toothpastes come in many different brands, flavors and types. If you smoke, you may benefit from a smoker's toothpaste that combats tooth stains from nicotine and tar. If you have sensitive teeth that hurt when contacting cold or hot sources, a low-abrasive toothpaste for sensitive teeth is best. Other toothpastes help control tartar or whiten teeth. Both toothpastes and gels are equally effective and safe. When choosing a tooth cleansing paste or gel, look for the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval on the packaging. This means that the product has been tested and meets standards of effectiveness and safety.

    Brushing Alternatives

    • The chewable toothbrush is an alternative to brushing when you are on the go or after meals outdoors. You don't need water or toothpaste to use the brush; all you do is chew on the brush. The chewable brush contains xylitol which is found in many sugar-free chewing gums. Another on-the-go brushing alternative is textured dental wipes. Dental wipes are available for toddlers and adults. The wipes are placed on your index finger and swiped over your teeth, gums and tongue.

    Brushing Technique

    • The way you brush your teeth differs depending on the products you use. The actual tooth brushing process remains the same. To maintain good oral hygiene, brush two times per day for two minutes per session; brush one time in the morning and one time before going to bed. Brush the outer and inner surface of your upper and lower teeth. Brush your tongue to eliminate bacteria and avoid bad breath. Switch your toothbrush every three months or purchase a new brush head for your electric or sonic care toothbrush. Floss in between your teeth before brushing them and rinse with mouthwash after brushing.
