How to Get Rid of Smoke Breath

Smoking cigarettes is bad for your health and bad for your breath. Smoking reduces the saliva flow in your mouth, which is needed to rinse and cleanse your mouth of bacteria. Without sufficient saliva, the amount of bacteria increases. Over time, sulfur compounds are produced and unpleasant smelling breath emerges. The best way to eliminate smoker's breath is to quit smoking completely. If you are not ready to do so, there are some other remedies you can use.

Brush your teeth, the inside of your cheeks and your tongue, right after smoking. Use a toothpaste geared toward smokers or any other over-the-counter fluoride toothpaste. When you smoke, tar and nicotine are deposited on the inside surfaces of your mouth. These substances build up and cause bad breath if not eliminated.

Chew a strongly flavored gum or suck on hard candy to eliminate smoke breath. Find a strong, minty gum or hard candy that is sugar free or so it won't damage your teeth. Chewing gum and sucking on candy promotes saliva flow which washes your mouth and dissolves sulfur compounds.

Rinse your mouth with mouthwash right after smoking. Swish the mouthwash around in your mouth for 30 seconds before spitting it out. Look for a mouthwash that is antibacterial and alcohol-free, or make your own mouthwash by mixing equal amounts of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide and water. You can also use a smoker's mouthwash, which is geared toward eliminating cigarette breath and removing tobacco surface stains from your teeth.
