How to Purchase Your Own Dental Plan

Some employers provide medical benefits that include a dental plan. However, this is not something you should count on when starting a new job. If you're hired by a company that does not offer dental insurance, don't panic. With some research and patience, you can buy your own plan and keep your teeth healthy.

Instructions

    • 1

Find insurance companies that offer dental plans. Get recommendations from friends, family and co-workers, or ask your dentist.

    • 2

Pick only companies that are licensed by your state, and check them out at the Better Business Bureau.

    • 3

Talk with the dental plan provider about medical decisions. Choose a provider that leaves them up to you and your dentist. Some insurance companies will try to intervene in such decisions.

    • 4

Determine exactly what the plan covers. Some offer only minimal coverage, such as regular checkups and cleanings. However, if you have special needs, such as dentures or gum disease, choose a plan that covers more options. Some partially cover cosmetic or orthodontic procedures, as well.

    • 5

Get quotes from various providers. The quotes should include monthly costs, as well as co-payment amounts. For example, one plan might cover 20 percent of preventative dental care, while another might cover 50 percent. However, the monthly costs might differ. You probably need at least $1,000 of coverage for the year, but this can be much lower or higher depending on the plan.

    • 6

Arrange for a payment method with the provider you choose. You might have to send a monthly check, but some providers will allow you to pay premiums by automatic bank withdrawals or with your credit card.
