How to Get Used to a New Pair of Dentures

Although dentures may look natural, they often don't feel that way. It takes many people between two to six weeks to get used to wearing them. Dentures are not only designed to remedy cosmetic issues caused by not having teeth, but to make it easier to chew food. Even still, dentures can cause pain and discomfort along your jaw line. To get used to dentures, there are few things you must do.

Instructions

    • 1

Eat soft foods while wearing your dentures. Take small bites to learn how to chew with your new teeth. After you have adjusted to eating soft foods with your new dentures, graduate to more solid foods.

    • 2

Put your dentures in your mouth and read aloud to yourself for 30 minutes or longer for the first few days after getting your dentures. New dentures often cause one to slur, reading aloud will help your tongue get used to the position of your new teeth and remedy slurred speech.

    • 3

Take sips of water throughout the day to conquer the feeling of dry mouth caused by wearing new dentures.

    • 4

Remove the dentures at night if advised to do so by the dentist. Many dentists will want you to remove your dentures for at least six hours per day.

    • 5

Return to the dentist after eight weeks if you are still having trouble adjusting to your dentures. The dentist may need to adjust them because they don't fit properly.

    • 6

Refit your dentures every five to seven years. This is necessary because the dentures cause your jawbones to reduce in size, requiring the need to restructure the denture.
