How to Prevent Labret Gum Erosion

The labret is perhaps one of the most popular facial piercings. Traditionally, a labret piercing is placed in a central location just below the bottom lip, although they can be placed off-center or farther down on the face near the chin, which is often called a "lowbret." One of the most common problems with labret piercings -- aside from infection -- is gum erosion. This occurs due to the constant rubbing of the metal jewelry against the gums.

Talk with your piercer about a better jewelry option. Depending on the exact location of the piercing and your anatomy, captive bead rings or fishtail studs may prevent or reduce the amount of gum damage. Traditional labret studs with soft cushioned backs are also available and tend to be more gentle on the gums.

Apply dental wax to your gums every two to four hours throughout the day. This wax is often used to protect the gums and insides of lips for people with braces. The thin wax barrier may help protect the gums from the jewelry when regularly applied.

Take out the jewelry when you eat as the jewelry may constantly rub against the gums while you chew. However, jewelry should only be taken out if the piercing is fully healed.
