1
Place your mouth guard on a paper plate so that the molding material faces upward. Set your timer on the counter, next to the mirror or wherever you plan on shaping your mouth guard.
-
2
Microwave your mouth guard on the paper plate for 50 seconds, remove and allow it to cool for 10 seconds. Note that some mouth guards require soaking in a bowl of cool water for three seconds immediately after microwaving and before shaping in your mouth.
-
3
Touch the upward-facing molding material gently with your finger to test the consistency. Warm, slightly sticky molding material indicates your mouth guard is ready for shaping inside your mouth.
-
4
Stand in front of a mirror and open your mouth. Point the soft, sticky side upward and center the mouth guard on your two front teeth.
-
5
Close your mouth slowly and gently until both your top and bottom teeth connect with the mouth guard. Push the soft material into the roof of your mouth with your tongue. Some brands instruct you to reopen your mouth and press the soft material into your gum line and teeth with your fingers.
-
6
Keep your jaw closed and suck in any excess moisture from your mouth guard for two to four minutes. Do not attempt to wiggle or adjust your mouth guard during this molding period.
-
7
Remove the mouth guard gently and place in a bowl of cold water for three to five minutes. The cold water will secure the shape of your mouth guard permanently.
