How to Treat Cankers

Canker sores, or aphthous ulcers, are small sores in the mouth. Cankers can be rather painful and disrupt your ability to eat and speak comfortably. Once you know how to treat canker sores, you should be able to clear them up on your own. Generally home treatment is adequate for treating cankers, but if home treatment fails consult your physician because a prescription may be needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply an over-the-counter oral topical analgesic such as Anbesol or Orajel. WebMd recommends that you look for an oral topical pain reliever that contains both glycerin and peroxide because it will both protect the sore and fight infection.

    • 2

Rinse your mouth 2-3 times each day. Use a solution of 1/4 cup peroxide and 1/4 cup water, or an antiseptic mouthwash.

    • 3

Mix a paste of 1 tbsp. of baking soda and 1/2 tbsp. water. Apply the paste to your canker sore 3 to 4 times daily to protect it. You can also use milk of magnesia as a substitute for the baking soda paste.

    • 4

Avoid eating spicy or acidic foods. Also avoid foods that are hard or crispy as they may irritate the sore.

    • 5

Suck on ice and hold it against the sore with your tongue. This will help numb the sore and reduce pain.
