How to Use a TMJ Coil

Using the TMJ coil properly can make the difference between having a radiant smile and the development of damaged, problemsome teeth. The TMJ device is used to position the jaw during the MRI, while the coil within the device can widen the jaw to the specifications of the dentist. Remember to sterilize the TMJ coil to avoid giving your patients oral diseases, such as mononucleosis and cold sores.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide down the two opposing disposable mouthpieces that are furthest away from the handle. The mouthpiece on the right side will be facing up, while the lower-left device will be facing down.

    • 2

Place the mouthpiece inside the patient's mouth, and then adjust the sliding mechanism to open the patient's jaw. The adjustment should allow you to use the MRI machine to take pictures of the patient's mouth and make the patient comfortable. Adjust the mouthpiece by sound; every time you hear a clicking noise, the coils in the TMJ increase and decrease by 1 millimeter.

    • 3

Complete the MRI scan, and then press the release button on the side of the device. Carefully remove the TMJ device from the patient's mouth.

    • 4

Clean and sterilize the TMJ device manually. Fill a basin with warm water, and then clean the instrument with a non-foaming detergent and a wire brush. With the tools immersed in the water, pay extra attention to crevices and joints. Rinse the TMJ with hot water, and then do a final inspection. Dry the TMJ with a paper towel, and then place it into your sterilization bag. Complete the usage of the TMJ by placing the bag into the sterilization receptacle. With some steam, you can reuse the TMJ device on other patients.
