Natural Plaque Removal Remedies
Plaque is a film of bacteria that grows and eventually hardens on your teeth. It looks and smells unattractive, and leads to several serious conditions, such as gingivitis and periodontal disease. You can prevent plaque build up and remove existing plaque by practicing proper dental hygiene and trying a few home remedies.-
Brush Properly
-
Brushing seems like an obvious way to remove plaque, but many people don't brush properly. You should choose a small brush with round, soft bristles to protect gum tissue. Use toothpaste with fluoride, and check to make sure it carries the ADA seal of approval. When brushing, hold your brush like a pen, turning the bristles at a 45 degree angle. Move the brush in a circular motion, over one or two teeth at a time.
Floss Correctly
-
Flossing is more effective in plaque control than brushing. Use 18 inches of floss, winding both ends around your middle fingers until there is about an inch of floss between them. Ease the floss gently between your teeth, scraping it downward on your upper teeth and upward on your lower teeth.
Rinse Between Meals
-
Rinsing between meals removes excess food particles. You can use a commercial mouthwash, or make your own with half hydrogen peroxide and half water. If you don't have mouthwash handy, just use water.
Eat Cheese Before Meals
-
Eating 5 grams of an aged cheese, such as cheddar, before meals can eliminate the acid production that contributes to plaque build-up.
