How to Resolve Payment Disputes With a Dentist

High dental bills can catch you by surprise and cause a strain on your finances. Fees vary widely, but most dentists will happily sit down and talk to you reasonably about the charges, so you can reach an agreement. Negotiating a fair deal is in the best of interests of both dentist and client. Some other avenues exist if you can't reach a compromise with your dentist, however.

Instructions

    • 1

Agree upon all fees with your dentist before he does any dental work. Make sure you know exactly what you pay and for what procedure.

    • 2

Book a dental appointment to discuss the charges.

    • 3

Explain to your dentist why you feel your bill is mistaken or you have been unfairly charged. Show her evidence to back up your argument, such as any written documents that show you reasonably expected a lower bill, or information from other dentists showing they charge less for the same procedure. Avoid blaming or making accusations.

    • 4

Phone or email your insurance company, as it might have its own guidelines or support for resolving disputes over dental payments.

    • 5

Contact your local state dental society if talking to your dentist fails. A society that belongs to the American Dental Association can assist you and investigate your claim. You can find a list of contacts on the ADA website.

    • 6

Send a complaint to the State Licensing Board if every other route fails. Do not use strong language, such as "ridiculous" and "angry," but state your objections to the dental bill clearly and concisely, giving the main facts. You can find a list of state licensing boards at the Dental Watch website.
