Who Invented Hubba Bubba?

Hubba Bubba was introduced by the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company in 1979 as the company's first bubble gum. Unlike Spearmint and Doublemint, Hubba Bubba was sold in chunks, not sticks.

    • Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company was founded by William Wrigley in 1891. He used gum as a giveaway for other products he was selling, such as soap and baking powder. The gum became more popular, and Wrigley switched businesses.

    Hubba Bubba Name

    • The Hubba Bubba name implied an ease for blowing bubbles, which was also the way the product was marketed in its commercials. The name comes from "hubba hubba," a catchphrase that soldiers in World War II used when they liked something.

    Flavors

    • Wrigley initially sold Hubba Bubba only in the flavor known as original. Over time, more flavors were added like watermelon, strawberry and root beer. Most flavors are based on fruit flavors.
