If you must wait to see a dentist, a few temporary fixes can help control pain and maintain cosmetic appeal to your ailing mouth.

  Rinse off the piece of chipped tooth with water. Keep the broken piece of tooth in a safe place. If the piece is large enough, it might be bonded back to your tooth by a dentist.

  Rinse your mouth and apply a cold compress. This will ensure your mouth is free of bacteria and blood. Do not apply the compress directly to the chipped tooth as it might affect exposed nerves. Place the compress on the gums above or below the tooth.

  Relieve pain with over-the-counter medication. To control pain, take ibuprofen in small doses. Steer clear of aspirin as it restricts blood coagulation, which will affect any open cuts on the gums.

  Sand the tooth with an emery board to smooth sharp edges. Only attempt this if the chip is small and the area is not painful to the touch. Be careful not to file to much. A couple strokes should be enough.

  Purchase temporary tooth filling. This putty-like substance can smooth jagged edges and insulate the tooth from heat and cold. It can also be used to fill in lost fillings.
