Peridex Directions

Periodontal disease is caused by a build-up of plaque starting at the base of the gums and spreading gradually upward. Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease. If caught early enough, it can be contained and the results reversed. Peridex is the brand name for chlorhexidine gluconate thath is a prescription mouthwash. Used correctly, this medication can correct the swelling, redness and bleeding of the gums caused by gingivitis. It needs to be used consistently and under the guidance of a periodontist or dental technician.

Instructions

    • 1

Use Peridex every time you brush and floss your teeth. Open the bottle near a sink and fill the cap. Place the liquid into your mouth and move it back and forth in a swirling motion.

    • 2

Do this for at least 30 seconds. Continue swirling it until the 30 seconds has passed and then spit it out into the sink.

    • 3

Do not rinse your mouth regardless of how it tastes. You will remove the medication's effects if you do.

    • 4

Do this at least 30 minutes before you plan on eating or drinking anything. Do not use any other mouthwash unless you have discussed it with your dentist.

    • 5

Continue to use the Peridex for as long as it is prescribed, even if you see signs that the infection or inflammation is receding. Stopping in mid-course might not fully remove all the gems that are causing the problem and can result in building up a resistance to the medication.
