Options for Holding Dentures in Place
-
Wafers or Strips
-
Wafers, sometimes called strips, are thin pieces of adhesive that can provide some users with a more natural feel than powder or paste. With adhesive strips, the adhesive amount is premeasured, and there is no threat of oozing or unpleasant taste. The strips create a seal between the dentures and gums and are best for those with flat and/or narrow lower jaws. If the strip is not cut properly, you may feel the cushion with your tongue, but if you ensure that the strip fits the denture this should not be a problem.
Powder
-
Powdered adhesives will not change your bite in any way, and they tend to be easier to clean off of your gums than gel or paste adhesives. Powder adhesives can also have less of a noticeable taste than pastes. To apply a powder adhesive, simply sprinkle a fine layer of the powder on the surface of the denture that will adhere to your gum tissue.
Gel or Paste
-
Gels or pastes can sometimes ooze, and if you notice too much oozing when you put your dentures on you may want to scale back how much you apply. Along with oozing, the pastes can affect the taste of your food since you may taste the paste while eating. To combat older, less pleasant paste flavors, many manufacturers have attempted to add sweeter paste flavors to their products; however, you still may not want to taste mint or another flavor while eating. To avoid oozing, apply only small dots along the center and ridge area of the denture. If you follow the product's instructions, you should be able to achieve a firm hold with minimal taste interference.
