Uses of Laser in Dentistry
Dentists use laser technology to improve dental care procedures for patients. Lasers offer precision and allow dentists to focus on more localized areas in the teeth and gums so that tissue damage is minimized during surgery. With laser technology, dentists and oral surgeons can perform procedures that they may not have otherwise been able to perform.-
Cavities
-
Traditionally, dentists use turbine drills for filling cavities. However, hard tissue lasers can fill cavities more efficiently and effectively. With lasers, dentists no longer need to use drills, according to Web MD, and filling cavities may not require anesthesia (depending on the size and severity of the cavity). Lasers cut into the hard tissue the way a drill would, but with more precision and less impact to the surrounding teeth and gums.
Tumor Removal
-
Benign tumors or cysts that grow on the gums, cheeks or lips must be removed. Normally, removing tissue growth is a procedure that involves cutting into the tissue and its surrounding areas. However, laser technology provides a less invasive alternative to removing tumors and cysts. Metal tools can be put away, as dentists need only a laser to cut into the surface or just beneath it. With the laser's precision, patients may not even need sutures afterwards.
Whitening
-
Whitening teeth is a cosmetic dental procedure that bleaches the teeth to a shade of white that is lighter than the patient's current color. Dentists apply laser technology to teeth-whitening procedures because laser technology hastens the bleaching process. According to British Dental Health Foundation, laser whitening is done by directing the laser's light onto the teeth, which activates the chemicals to start whitening. Laser whitening can lighten teeth by about five or six shades.
Periodontal Reformation
-
Lasers can be used to reform the gums. Periodontists (or gum dentists) apply lasers to reshape the outline of gums or push back the gums to expose more bone. This procedure may be necessary for patients who have gummy smiles or have a medical condition that causes their gums to be misshapen.
