How to Find a Private Dentist

Some people put off finding a dentist until long after they are overdue for regular oral care. Finding a dentist, however, doesn't have to be traumatic. All it takes is a little research and a couple of phone calls.
  1. Significance

    • Studies suggest that up to 50 percent of Americans suffer from dental phobia or dental anxiety. This causes them to put off seeking needed oral care.

    Time Frame

    • Dentists recommend getting a checkup and cleaning at least once a year. Many say twice a year is better.

    Identification

    • If you have dental insurance, ask your insurance company to provide you with a list of approved dentists. Ask family, friends, and coworkers to review the list and make their suggestions. Also ask your primary care physician if he or she has heard good things about any of the dentists on the list.

    Considerations

    • The dentist you select should have a license to practice in the state you are seeking care. He or she should also have graduated from a dental school accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation. There should be no disciplinary action pending against the dentist with the state dental board.

    Warning

    • Avoid dentists who have a poor bedside manner, who don't take your dental anxieties seriously, who have no provisions for off-hours emergency care, and who try to talk you into expensive cosmetic procedures you don't need.
