How Do I Change a Sonicare IntelliClean Battery?

The Philips Sonicare IntelliClean electronic toothbrush has a recharge gauge that indicates when its battery power is low. Unlike some toothbrushes, the IntelliClean does not require battery replacement. Instead, the unit sits on a charger base and can last up to two weeks on a full charge. When the battery is completely depleted, the user must discard the unit.

The IntelliClean originally came with a supply of custom-made Crest liquid toothpaste, which the toothbrush itself dispensed. However, Philips has discontinued the IntelliClean toothbrush, and no longer sells the toothpaste cartridges or replacement heads.

Check the IntelliClean's recharge level indicator. If the LED display is solid green, then the brush is fully charged. A full charge is sufficient for two weeks, or roughly 28 two-minute brushes.

A blinking yellow LED display appears when fewer than three uses remain. This lets you know that it's time to recharge the battery.

Place the unit on the charger until the recharge level indicator reverts to the solid green LED display. This display will pulse every minute after reaching full charge, for as long as the brush remains on the charger base. Keeping your brush on the charger base when not in use will ensure maximum battery life.

Recycle the nickel-cadmium (NiCad) battery of your IntelliClean toothbrush when it no longer holds a charge. Visit Call2Recycle (see Resources) for instructions on how to dispose of the battery safely, since many states have outlawed dumping rechargeable batteries in the trash. Nickel-cadmium batteries, in particular, pose a serious health risk: they contain cadmium, a metal that can cause damage to kidneys and bones. You can also drop your battery off at a local RadioShack store for safe recycling.
