What Is Maxillary Denture?

Dentures are devices worn to replace missing teeth, and maxillary dentures are worn to replace teeth missing along the upper gumline. Traditional maxillary dentures are fully removable.

Advantages of Maxillary Dentures

• Maxillary dentures help their wearers chew their food. They also help them properly pronounce sounds produced by placing the tongue against the front teeth and alveolar ridge. In addition, they help the wearer look more natural and attractive.

Problems with Maxillary Dentures

• Complete maxillary dentures are worn by patients who have lost all their upper teeth. Some patients gag because of having something in their mouth that isn't food, and others experience excess saliva for the same reason. Some patients have problems with retention--keeping a tight seal between the maxillary dentures and the roof of the mouth--which can produce clicking and slipping of the dentures. Gingivitis under the dentures can also be a problem.

Care of Maxillary Dentures

• Maxillary dentures must be kept free from food stains. They should be brushed every day with denture care toothpaste, and soaked overnight in a denture care liquid. Maxillary denture wearers should not use toothpicks.
