Side Effects of Poligrip Comfort Seal Strips

Poligrip Comfort Seal Strips are a denture adhesive manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, who report no side effects from any of the product's ingredients. GlaxoSmithKline reformulated several of the company's other Poligrip products due to reports of side effects from zinc.

Too much zinc can cause neurological symptoms such as trouble walking, numbness or tingling in extremities and anemia. Poligrip Comfort Seal Strips do not contain zinc, and are recommended as an alternative product to other denture adhesives containing zinc.
  1. Follow Package Directions

    • GlaxoSmithKline found that while many of their customers were happy with their denture adhesive, a significant number were using the product more often or in greater quantities than recommended. Follow the package directions when using your denture adhesive. GlaxoSmithKline advises that if you are using more adhesive than recommended, your dentures may be fitted improperly. The ingredients from denture adhesive absorb into your body through skin contact and through ingestion, so using more than the recommended amount can cause problems.

    Use Zinc-Free Adhesive

    • If you have been using your zinc-containing denture adhesive for several years or more often than once per day, GlaxoSmithKline recommends that you stop using the product and consult your physician. Even if you are not experiencing any symptoms, your doctor can test you for elevated zinc levels. Your doctor can also check for any neurological symptoms you may not have noticed. Switch to a denture adhesive which does not contain zinc to avoid any future problems. GlaxoSmithKline voluntarily opted to cease production of adhesives which contain zinc.

    Verify Ingredients

    • As with any medications, check the label when you purchase denture adhesive. Be especially careful to look at the full list of ingredients to see if zinc appears in the list. GlaxoSmithKline products will now prominently display the words "Zinc Free Formula" at the top of the package. You can always contact the manufacturer directly if you have any question about whether the denture adhesive contains zinc. If you take any supplements that contain zinc, be especially vigilant about reading labels.
