Pediatric Dentistry Instruments

Pediatric dental tools are similar to those used in adult dental care. A good pediatric dentist will explain each of the tools in the examination room to a child, before putting those tools to use. Giving children information about different dentist's tools, including the name of the tool and how it is used by the dentist, can help to minimize feelings of anxiety and fear.
  1. Dental Mirror

    • The dental mirror helps the dentist to see the child's teeth from all angles.

The dentist will have a small, round mirror which is attached at an angle to a long metal handle. The dental mirror is used during regular visits, and routine dental check-ups. The mirror aids the dentist in seeing a child's teeth from all angles.

    Dental Probe

    • A dental probe is used to determine the condition of the child's teeth.

The dental probe is used to help the dentist determine the condition of the child's teeth. It can test for soft spots, or areas where the enamel has been weakened or worn away. This tool can also help the dentist to measure the space between the child's teeth and gums. If there is plaque on the child's teeth the dental probe may also be employed as a tool to help remove it.

    Dental Explorer

    • The dental explorer helps the dentist locate cavities or other tooth problems.

The dental explorer is used during check-ups and examinations in conjunction with the dental mirror and dental probe. The dental explorer helps the dentist to locate cavities, pits, and areas of tarter build-up on the teeth. The dentist often uses the dental explorer to count the child's teeth as well.

    Air and Water Syringe

    • The air and water syringe is used to rinse and dry the child's mouth.

A syringe attached to a long hose helps the dentist to rinse the child's mouth, and then to dry it with air. The air and water syringe may be used during regular examinations, as well as during special procedures.

    Aspirator

    • The suctioning device is used to remove excess saliva during a dental procedure.

The aspirator, or suctioning device is used to remove excess saliva from the child's mouth. Generally the nurse or dental assistant will use this device during dental procedures.

Dental Drill or Air Abrasion Unit

    • A dental drill may be used to remove damaged areas or broken edges from the teeth.

The dentist will use the dental drill to grind away parts of the teeth which need to be removed. This device is used only if the child needs to have a tooth filled, or otherwise repaired.

Some pediatric dentists are using the air abrasion method to remove decaying tooth parts. This method employs an air abrasion unit, rather than a traditional dentist drill. An air abrasion unit works by blowing a fine stream of aluminum oxide particles on to the teeth. This tool can perform the same work as the dentist's drill, but is silent, and virtually painless.
