How to Become a Dentist in the UK

Becoming a dentist in the United Kingdom is slightly different than the dental track in the United States. While it takes a slightly shorter period of time, dentistry-bound students must declare their intention to study the field earlier than their American counterparts.

  1. How to Become a Dentist in the UK

    • 1

Enroll in pre-undergraduate science courses. The most important courses will be biology and chemistry. The grading system in the UK scores the highest academic achievement at AAA. The top dentistry schools in the UK (there are 13) will only accept AAA scores in the foundational science courses.

    • 2

Apply to a dentistry school. These schools are academically rigorous and require a five-year stay at university. As opposed to American universities, where students obtain a baccalaureate degree before entering dental school, the UK schools are designed to prepare students for the field in one five-year plan. While curriculums do not vary drastically, take into account geographic location, financial aid and placement opportunities when applying to schools.

    • 3

Decide if you want an accelerated track. Some dental schools offer four-year plans (usually only offered to the highest-scoring students). Check Resources for more links to these programs. Enroll in the basic courses required by the institution. These include: anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, dental materials science and clinical practice. Often, especially if you have some form of financial aid, you'll be required to maintain a certain grade.

    • 4

Upon graduation, all successful students will be qualified to practice. However, before entering any public or private practice, all graduates must register with General Dental Council.

    • 5

Determine whether you seek further training. Often UK dentists specialize in fields to earn higher incomes and gain a particular knowledge. If this is your desire, you may need to check with your institution about higher learning programs and advanced qualification courses.
