Home Remedies for Soaking and Cleaning Dentures

Denture wearers must still clean their teeth. False teeth are susceptible to stains from coffee and food. Many denture wearers use a commercial product to whiten their dentures, however there are homemade remedies that will clean them just as well. These cleaners remove most stains and food particles, returning the denture to its original white color.
  1. Bleach and Water

    • One solution that will both clean and disinfect your dentures is bleach. It is a powerful cleanser used in many household products. To create a homemade bleach-cleaning solution, mix 1 tablespoon of bleach with 10 tablespoons of water and soak the dentures in this mixture for several hours. The bleach kills bacteria and germs and whitens the surface of the false teeth.

    Vinegar

    • Vinegar is also a powerful cleaner. Acetic acid is the active cleaning chemical inside of bleach. This solution is not as powerful as bleach. However, it is used in a larger proportion with water. To create this homemade remedy, add 1 cup of vinegar to 1 cup of water and soak the dentures in the solution overnight. It will kill bacteria and germs and remove food stains.

    Baking Soda

    • Baking soda, which is sodium bicarbonate product, is another home remedy. This solution will take care of food stains and bacteria. It is often used in toothpaste and promotes dental hygiene. To create this remedy, add 1 teaspoon of the baking soda to 1 cup of water and soak your dentures overnight. If you do not like the thought of using vinegar or bleach on your new dental work, this is another option.

    Toothpaste and Toothbrush

    • Another home solution is to use a toothbrush and toothpaste and manually brush the dentures clean. This will remove food, bacteria and stains. The dentures are brushed by hand, so you must be careful. Hold the dentures in one hand while you brush with the other. A whitening toothpaste or baking soda toothpaste will work equally well with this technique.
