A Dentist's Plaque Removal Tools

Plaque is a clear, odorless and sticky film that builds up on your teeth. Plaque consists of bacteria that cause tooth decay. Good oral hygiene that includes regular brushing and flossing helps reduce plaque. However, a dentist has the ability to remove plaque more effectively with special tools, including a periodontal probe, scaler and polisher.
  1. Sickle Probe

    • To remove plaque a dentist has to find it first. A sickle probe is a curved tool with the sickle probe on one end and a periodontal probe on the other end. The sickle probe tests the hardness of your teeth and measures the depth of periodontal pockets, which is the space between the teeth and gums. A sickle probe is also used to find plaque, tartar and other buildup.

    Mouth Mirror

    • A dentist also uses a mouth mirror to help find plaque. This handheld tool has a single- or double-sided mirror on one end. The dentist inserts it into the patient's mouth to look for plaque and other buildup in hard-to-see places. The mirror magnifies and reflects light so the dentist can easily find plaque, buildup and other oral problems.

    Scaler

    • A scaler is shaped like a hook. It removes plaque, tartar, stains and other buildup found on and between the teeth. The patient may experience pain when the dentist uses a scaler, especially if there is a large amount of plaque. The dentist may need to scrape below the gum line or accidentally scrape the gum, which can be painful. But the result is healthier and whiter teeth.

    Polisher

    • The polisher is a handheld tool with a rubber piece at the top that spins. The spinning motion buffs and polishes the teeth, making them whiter and giving them a fantastic shine. The polisher is also used to get rid of any plaque or buildup that the scaler may have missed. This tool does not cause any pain and may even produce a tickling sensation.
