Benefits or Risks of Using Xylitol
According to the California Dental Association, Xylitol is a sugar substitute made of sugar alcohol. Xylitol is as sweet as sugar and can be used in a variety of foods. It is most commonly found in sugar-free mints and sugar-free chewing gum. Xylitol has benefits for dental health when used regularly. When taken in excess, xylitol can cause some negative side effects as well.-
Protection Against Cavities
-
The California Dental Association states that xylitol can prevent the formation of dental cavities. Xylitol makes it impossible for the bacteria that causes cavities to grow in the mouth because this bacteria is unable to feed off xylitol. Using xylitol in the form of mints or gum three to five times a day can actually change the bacteria levels within the mouth and decrease the amount of plaque that forms on teeth. This is equal to about 5 grams of xylitol per day.
Protecting Teeth of Unborn Baby
-
According to the California Dental Association, a mother who consumes xylitol during pregnancy may be taking proactive measures to protect the teeth of her unborn baby. Mothers can pass on the type of bacteria that forms cavities to their babies, and using xylitol decreases the amount of bacteria that is passed on.
Gastrointestinal Problems
-
While individuals consuming 5mg of xylitol or less will generally not experience side effects, excessive use of xylitol can lead to gastrointestinal upset. According to MedTV, high doses of xylitol can cause diarrhea and gas, as is the case with other types of sugar alcohols. When taken in large doses xylitol has a laxative effect.
