Proper Application of Denture Adhesive

Adhesive is not absolutely necessary for those who wear dentures. It is advisable for people who have lost their teeth and must wear a prosthetic, but others can make due without it. As Dentalfind.com points out, "Dentures glue is not for everyone, and should only be used in certain situations."
  1. When Not to Use Adhesive

    • According to Dentalfind.com, you shouldn't use an adhesive if you have poorly fitting dentures or if you have not visited your dentist in a long while. The Columbia University College of Dental Medicine advises that you see a dentist every six months. If your dentures no longer fit perfectly, it may be time for a realignment. Also, as Dr. Jeffrey Chen's office website points out, you are a poor candidate for denture adhesive if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

    Reasons for Use

    • According to the Chen website, assuming your dentist has properly constructed your dentures, you can use adhesive to hold your dentures in place if you have dry mouth. Your dentist also might recommend an adhesive if you are a stroke victim or if you are a public speaker, singer or an actor or actress.

    Application

    • Chen advises using the absolute minimum amount necessary for achieving the strongest hold. Do not use so much that the paste oozes into your saliva. He also advises that you distribute the adhesive evenly along the surface which must support the denture. Use less than you think you need, then gradually increase the amount as necessary, Chen advises. He also recommends applying adhesive only to a clean set of dentures.

    Types Of Adhesives

    • Adhesive comes in two forms: powder and paste. According to the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, when applying the powdery kind, you should start by cleaning your denture. Next, shake a layer of the adhesive on the plate. After doing this, place the denture back in your mouth. As the college's website points out, powder tends to work better on uppers rather than lowers, because lower plates tend to get more food and liquid on them.
For best results when using paste adhesive, apply it to a wet denture, Chen advises. Keep the paste away from denture borders to minimize oozing. Chen recommends applying three short strips of adhesive along the ridge area and one down the center.
