How to Relieve Tooth Pain When Pregnant

Usually when you get a toothache, you can pull almost any type of pain reliever out of the medicine cabinet. If you are pregnant, your options are limited, but this shouldn't keep you from trying to relieve your tooth pain, since a toothache is extra stress on your body and the baby. There are some things you can do to relieve a toothache, so don't endure unnecessary pain.

Instructions

    • 1

Schedule an appointment with your dentist. Let him know that you are pregnant and he can check your tooth to see what is causing the pain and can fill the tooth if you have a cavity.

    • 2

Avoid any foods or drinks that your teeth may be sensitive to, such as hot or cold foods or beverages.

    • 3

Take acetaminophen (Tylenol) to relieve toothache pain. Acetaminophen is considered a safe pain reliever to take during pregnancy.

    • 4

Talk to your prenatal care provider about using benzocaine topical (Orajel or Anbesol). These drugs are considered category C since there is not enough research to know if it can affect the baby, but your doctor or midwife may decide that the benefits outweigh the risks.
