Natural Home Remedy for Hurting Gums

Gums that hurt are a common problem. Your gums play an important role in dental health and overall well-being. Some causes of gum pain include harsh or improper brushing, flossing, gum disease, and, more seriously, infection or abscess. The latter two, require attention from a dental professional; however, there are natural remedies to reduce pain until your appointment.
  1. Cloves

    • Cloves have a natural numbing effect. Clove oil added to a cotton ball and then dabbed on a sore area will help fight or reduce infection as well as numb the pain. You can also use whole cloves by placing them in your month and allowing them to soften. Once pliable, press them against affected areas to release oils. You can keep them there for up to 30 minutes to ease pain.

    Peppermint Tea

    • Peppermint tea is a pleasing and calming way to deal with gum pain. Add 1 tsp. dried peppermint leaves to 1 cup boiling water and allow it to steep for approximately 20 minutes. This will numb and soothe your gums.

    Salt or Lemon Rinse

    • Frequent rinsing with salt water will clean gums and reduce swelling and, therefore, the pain that accompanies it. 1 tsp. salt mixed in tepid water will help fight infection and provide temporary relief. Make sure you spit out the rinse as opposed to swallowing it. If you are on a salt-restricted diet or have high blood pressure, you can get similar relief by squeezing a lemon into warm water and rinsing.

    Prevention

    • The best method is taking preventive action to avoid gum pain. Develop a healthy routine and diet. Don't smoke. Brush carefully, using a soft toothbrush and following a circular pattern. Floss daily to remove food that may be trapped between teeth. Routine dental checkups help maintain dental health and avoid gum pain.
