Types of Denture Bonding Products

Denture bonding products are designed to help dentures stay in place all day. Different kinds of denture bonding products are available, although they all serve a common purpose. The type of denture bonding product chosen by the denture wearer is based on preference and effectiveness.
  1. Necessity

    • The American Dental Association says that denture adhesives can add extra retention for dentures. This however does not mean that the use of adhesive should be a solution for dentures that do not fit properly. Ada.org recommends getting dentures relined or replaced in the case of sores, looseness or discomfort.

    Types

    • According to Yourdentalhelp.com, there are two main types of denture bonding products. These include pastes and powders. However, these two types are not the only denture bonding products on the market. According to Mypolycare.com, there are also denture adhesive strips available. Each type of adhesive has its pros and cons, and use is simply based on the denture wearer's personal preference.

    Oozing Problems

    • Pastes should be applied once a day, Mypolycare.com says. Starting with a small amount is important because using too much adhesive can cause oozing. Mypolycare.com maintains that a tube weighing 1.4 ounces should last about four to six weeks. If excess adhesive is constantly being used it is a sign that the dentures may not fit properly. Paste should be removed through rinsing and brushing after the dentures have been taken off.

    Process

    • Mypolycare.com recommends the following steps when applying and removing powder adhesive from the dentures. Before powder is administered, the dentures should be thoroughly cleaned, but not dried. The powder should then be applied evenly to the dentures. Excess powder should be removed. After this is done, dentures should be pressed in place, and held firmly to ensure security. To remove the adhesive, dentures should be taken out and cleaned through rinsing and brushing.

    Adhesive Strip Application

    • Mypolycare.com lists application and removal instructions for denture adhesive strips. To apply the strips dentures, should be thoroughly cleaned and dried. After this is completed, adhesive strips in sections of a quarter inch or less should be applied where needed, making sure that the strips are not placed too close to the edges of the dentures. The next step is to rinse your mouth before the dentures are placed in the mouth. Lastly, the dentures should be placed in the mouth, held firmly, and bitten down on to make sure they are secure. To remove adhesive strips, first rinse your mouth with water. Then remove the dentures. Denture adhesive should be removed through rinsing and brushing.
