Home Remedies for Bad Breath Caused by Throat Infection

Viruses like the common cold, flu or mononucleosis or the common bacteria streptococcus can cause throat infection. The most common throat infection is strep throat. The area in and around the throat is inflamed and bacteria and germs build up at the back of the throat. These bacteria produce foul-smelling sulfides that cause bad breath. Unlike chronic bad breath (halitosis), this will clear once infection goes away. Home remedies can help heal throat infection.
  1. Salt Water

    • Most dentists will prescribe warm salt water rinse to fight infection after intrusive dental work is done. This will work well for throat infection as well. Mix 1/2 tsp. of salt with 1 cup of warm water and gargle several times a day. Gargling with salt water reduces inflammation and kills bacteria.

    Drink Tea

    • Tea has many healing properties from fighting cancer to restoring fresh breath. Chamomile, marjoram and ginger have soothing qualities and their rich antioxidant properties help fight bacteria. Enjoy a cup of tea with a little lemon and honey added to fight throat infection.

Thyme is another antioxidant-rich herb that can double up as a soothing tea. Its antiseptic properties can kill bacteria and restore fresh breath. Lightly crush five to six fresh thyme leaves and put in a cup. Pour boiling water over and let it stand for five minutes. Remove leaves and drink.

    Apple Cider Vinegar

    • It makes a good salad dressing and dieters use it to bust fat, but apple cider vinegar is also potent in killing bacteria in the mouth. According to health911.com, acidity in the vinegar can kill bacteria on contact. It also soothes and minimizes pain often associated with throat infection. Mix 1 to 2 tsp. of apple cider vinegar in one glass of water. Gargle every hour. Since apple cider vinegar is very acidic, rinse the mouth after gargling to keep the acid from eroding the enamel of the teeth.

    Myrrh

    • Myrrh has astringent properties that can bring relief to throat infection. When used as a gargle, it kills bacteria and prevents bad breath in the process. Simply simmer 1 tsp. of myrrh in 2 cups of water for half an hour. Once cooled, drain and dilute 1 tsp. of myrrh solution with half a cup of water to gargle. Repeat five to six times a day.

    Lozenges

    • Sucking on hard candies can soothe irritated throats. Choose lozenges infused with natural antiseptic herbs and spices. For instance, licorice lozenges are made from anise, which kills bacteria and destroys breath odors. Peppermint lozenges contain menthol, an antiseptic soothing ingredient that naturally tames sore throat and freshens breath.
