How Often Should People Go to the Dentist?

Regular dental visits are important to asses the condition of a persons teeth and overall oral health. Generally, dentists recommended visits twice a year for a cleaning and a checkup.
  1. Identification

    • The number of visits to a dentist should be determined by the dentist, the dental hygienist and the patient. Most dental insurance companies cover a twice-a-year cleanings and checkups. More visits may be required if dental problems, such as cavities, are found.

    Prevention

    • The prevention of cavities, gum diseases and other oral health problems is the goal of regular dental visits. According to The Nemours Foundation, "regular" means at least every six months.

    Checkups

    • According to Dennis Brender, D.D.S., a check-up usually involves a complete oral exam, along with a dental and medical history, an oral cancer screening and a professional cleaning.

    X-rays

    • On an initial visit, a dentist often recommends that X-rays be taken of the mouth. X-rays are necessary to evaluate the condition of teeth, roots and gum structure, and bone conditions which are not visible in the surface.

    Considerations

    • It is important to tell your dentist about any problems you may be experiencing in your mouth. Issues can be addressed and fewer visits may result.
