How to Clean Bacteria Off the Tongue

A quarter of all instances of bad breath are directly caused by bacteria on the tongue. The bacteria lurks within the crevices of the tongue's surface and is identified by a thick yellow or gray coating. This bacteria not only is hygienically offensive but can result in systemic disease including heart diseases and pre-term low birth weights. Following simple tongue-cleaning methods can eliminate bad breath and help ensure good health.

  1. How to Clean Bacteria Off The Tongue

    • 1
Look for toothpastes containing neutralizing ingredients.

Apply toothpaste containing volatile sulfur compound neutralizing agents to a toothbrush or tongue scraper. Look for chlorine dioxide, zinc or cetylpyridinium chloride in the toothpaste's ingredients. The tip of a plastic spoon also may be used if a tongue scraper isn't available.

    • 2
Scrape beginning at the farthest point at the rear of the tongue toward the front of the mouth.

Beginning as far back on tongue as possible, apply firm pressure and scrape toward the front of the mouth. It is essential to reach the back portion of the tongue because that is most bacteria grows and gathers. Bacteria on the back of the tongue is not routinely swept away by the constant cleansing flush that saliva provides to the rest of the mouth. Repeat scraping until all areas of the tongue appear clean.

Practicing routine but vigilant dental hygiene reinforces tongue scraping.

Supplement routine scraping with tooth brushing and mouthwash use twice daily.
