What is the difference between a dentist and dental hygenist?

Dentists and dental hygienists are both oral health professionals, but they have different roles and responsibilities.

Dentists

- Have a doctorate degree in dentistry (DMD or DDS)

- Are licensed to diagnose and treat oral health problems

- Provide a wide range of services, including:

- Preventive care, such as cleanings and fluoride treatments

- Restorative care, such as fillings and crowns

- Surgical care, such as extractions and implants

- Orthodontic care, such as braces and retainers

Dental Hygienists

- Have an associate's degree in dental hygiene

- Are licensed to perform preventive dental care and provide oral health education

- Provide a variety of services, including:

- Cleanings

- Fluoride treatments

- X-rays

- Sealants

- Oral health education

In general, dentists have more training and are responsible for more complex procedures than dental hygienists. However, both dentists and dental hygienists are important members of the oral health care team and work together to provide patients with the best possible care.
