How to Prepare an Inverted Cone

The distinctive and shrill sound of a dental drill scares many people away. It is associated with pain and discomfort. Nobody likes the idea of getting a drill pushed into their mouth. If you are going to get your teeth drilled, you might as well make sure it is done right. An inverted cone bur is commonly used to remove bits of teeth. It is inserted into a dental drill like a drill bit. The bur must be prepared properly to protect you from sub-par dental work and infection.

Instructions

    • 1

Take cross-contamination measures. Put on a mask, apron, eye protection and heavy-duty utility gloves. Keep the inverted cone bur away from used dental equipment.

    • 2

Let the inverted cone soak in a disinfectant solution designed for your specific bur for precisely 10 minutes. Do not leave the bur in the solution for longer than 10 minutes, as the bur may begin to corrode.

    • 3

Clean the inverted cone bur manually. Use a dental bur cleaning brush to brush the bur clean. Rinse the bur free of disinfectant solution with distilled water.

    • 4

Place the bur in a clean, dry dental drill holder. Let the inverted cone bur dry. Remove the heavy duty gloves.

    • 5

Note the RPM capacity of the inverted cone bur. The manufacturer will display the RPM limit on the inverted cone's packaging. Write it down and keep the note near the RPM meter of the dental drill. Do this so the RPM limit will not be exceeded.

    • 6

Check the dental drill's water cooling system. Make sure enough water is getting into the drill so the inverted cone bur does not cause the drill to overheat.

    • 7

Unwrap and put on a brand new pair of rubber gloves. Pick the bur up and fit it into the turbine and close the ferrule. Do not force the bur into the turbine.
