How to Brush Teeth in a Side to Side Motion

When working to maintain a healthy lifestyle, don't overlook the importance of keeping your teeth and gums clean to avoid cavities. You should brush your teeth a minimum of two times a day. Don't forget to clean your gums and tongue to kill lurking bacteria. A study conducted by the Mayo Clinic discovered that poor dental health increases your risk of other health problems, such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease. Knowing how to properly brush your teeth keeps them looking and feeling healthy.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a toothbrush with soft bristles to prevent harsh abrasion against your gums. If you have sensitive gums, use of a hard-bristle toothbrush may cause them to bleed. Replace your toothbrush if the bristles are frayed or every three to four months.

    • 2

Squirt a small amount of toothpaste on your toothbrush, enough to cover the bristles, and begin brushing your lower teeth. Clamp your teeth down together and smile. Begin in the back corner of the left side of your mouth and brush side-to-side. Repeat for the right side.

    • 3

Keep smiling and brush the upper teeth, beginning in the back, from one side to another. Repeat on the opposite side.

    • 4

Open your mouth wide and brush the inner side of your teeth located next to your tongue. Repeat for the other side of your mouth.

    • 5

Stick out your tongue. Brush it lightly to remove bacteria.

    • 6

Rinse your toothbrush off and brush again using water to remove leftover traces of toothpaste. Gargle with mouth wash for a minty fresh taste.

    • 7

Floss your teeth after brushing to remove plaque and pieces of food stuck in between teeth that your toothbrush was unable to remove.
