What to Know About Tibialis Anterior Tendonitis
Tibialis anterior tendonitis is a condition that causes pain in the front of the lower leg, just above the ankle. It is caused by inflammation of the tibialis anterior tendon, which is the tendon that connects the shin muscle (tibialis anterior) to the foot.
Symptoms of tibialis anterior tendonitis include:
* Pain in the front of the lower leg, just above the ankle
* Swelling and tenderness over the tibialis anterior tendon
* Pain when flexing the foot upward (dorsiflexion)
* Crepitus (a grating sensation) when moving the foot
* Weakness in the ankle
Tibialis anterior tendonitis is often caused by:
* Overuse, such as from running or jumping too much
* Sudden increases in activity level
* Poor footwear
* Leg length discrepancies
* Pes planus (flat feet)
* Pes cavus (high arches)
Treatment for tibialis anterior tendonitis typically includes:
* Rest
* Ice
* Compression
* Elevation
* Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
* Physical therapy
* Custom orthotics
* Surgery (in severe cases)
Tibialis anterior tendonitis can usually be successfully treated with conservative measures. However, if the condition is severe or does not respond to conservative treatment, surgery may be necessary.
Here are some tips for preventing tibialis anterior tendonitis:
* Warm up before exercising.
* Increase your activity level gradually.
* Wear shoes that fit well and provide good support.
* Avoid running on hard surfaces.
* Listen to your body and stop if you feel pain.
If you experience pain in the front of your lower leg, just above the ankle, see your doctor to rule out tibialis anterior tendonitis. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent the condition from becoming chronic.
