What causes tubercolosis?

Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection caused by a germ called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but they can also spread to other parts of the body, like the brain, kidneys, or spine.

TB is spread through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. People who are in close contact with someone who has active TB are at risk of getting infected. TB is not spread through touch or sharing food or drinks.

TB can be a serious disease, but it is curable if it is treated early. Treatment for TB usually involves taking antibiotics for several months.
