1
Refrain from smoking and maintain a healthy diet. Tobacco can cause gum disease, and antioxidants and foods with vitamins C and E increase immunity and help prevent infection. Keeping stress levels down will also boost your immune system. Avoid eating too much sugar, as it can cause cavities.
-
2
Do not clench or grind your teeth. See a dentist if this is a problem, and obtain a mouth guard to protect against nighttime clenching or grinding.
-
3
Brush your teeth for two minutes twice daily at a minimum and ideally after every meal. Hold the brush at a 45 degree angle from the gum line. Clean all surfaces of your teeth gently, then brush the roof of your mouth and your tongue.
-
4
Floss between each tooth including the back teeth, forming a "C" shape along the side of one tooth and back up the side of the next.
-
5
Rinse your mouth with an antiseptic mouth rinse for 30 seconds to remove all loosened traces of food and plaque.
