Home Remedies for Tender, Swollen & Red Gums
Swollen, red gums are typically caused by gingivitis, though there can be other reasons, such as sinus infections, tooth abscesses or cavities. The first thing you need to do is determine the exact cause of the pain in order to treat it properly. Seek the advice of a qualified dentist as soon as you can. In the meantime, you can try a few things to soothe the pain.-
Feed Your Gums
-
Proper nutrition is important to all areas of your body, including your gums. Eating apples helps give you the vitamins you need to keep your gums healthy. Sugar-free cranberry juice is an excellent astringent that kills infection while also providing vitamin C to promote healthy gums and teeth.
Draw Out Infection
-
Soothing sore gums usually requires infections to be drawn out and defeated. Rinse with a solution of warm water and regular table salt three to four times a day to draw the excess fluids and infection from deep inside the gum tissue. Brushing and flossing are important, but there are areas you cannot reach and infection will remain.
Soothe Your Gums

Alleviating the pain is probably first and foremost on your mind while you wait for your dental appointment. A thin coat of aloe vera will serve the purpose. It is available over the counter in capsules. Break apart a capsule and rub the thick gel on your gums. You can also easily grow the heavy cactus-like plant on your window sill, then break off one of the thick gel-filled leaves and crack it open to get the healing gel. Of course, this will take longer, though it never hurts to have these plants around for later troubles.
Fresh lemon mixed with in warm water is a great soothing "tea." Drink this mixture several times a day, allowing it to remain in your mouth while you slowly let it trickle down your throat.
Take Care of Your Mouth

Remember that there is no substitute for dental care from a qualified dentist. Your dentist can work with you to find the cause of your swollen, red gums and develop solutions to cure the disease or injury.
