Marble Cooking Stone

Marble baking stones provide a method for cooking breads, pizzas, cookies and other food items that ensures even cooking and a beautiful presentation.
  1. Choosing a Marble Stone

    • Marble baking stones are graded specifically for food preparation and are safe to warm in the oven. The even, heated surface helps to ensure food is not burned or overcooked on only one side. The stones come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including rectangular and round stones that can be used to cook a variety of foods.
When purchasing a cooking stone, one should evaluate what items the stone will be used for: If the stone will mostly be used for cooking, purchasing a round stone would be best, while cooking breads may necessitate a rectangular stone.

    Cooking and Cleaning

    • Cooking stones may be glazed or unglazed. If a stone if unglazed, it should be "seasoned" with oil by putting oil over the stone and heating it in the oven at 400 to 500 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes. This should create a protective coating over the stone that prevents absorbing the food into the stone.
If a stone is unglazed, it should not be washed with soap and water, as this can seep in the stone and give whatever is cooked on it a soap-like flavor. Warm water and a scraper should be used instead. Even glazed baking stones should be washed with care, and instructions accompanying the stone may provide direction as to how to clean it.

    For Best Results

    • Marble baking stones work best when they are preheated and then food is put on the stone. Most stones should be heated at 400 to 500 degrees for at least 30 minutes, then food, such as pizza or bread, can be placed on the stone for cooking. Most items cooked in the oven can be cooked on the baking stone, including meats, however discretion should be used to prevent the spread of germs.
